This mobile application, created by SEO/Birdlife in collaboration with CEAB-CSIC, allows for the communication of sensitive marine wildlife bycatch (seabird, cetaceans and other marine mammals, sea turtles, sharks, and other fish of interest), which may occur during fishing activities, in both professional and recreational fishing.

This kind of undesirable catches represent a serious threat for these marine organisms, and, at the same time, may cause inconveniences and losses to fishers. The obtained data will contribute to a better knowledge of these bycatches: when, where and how they occur, in which gears and which are the most affected species. This kind of information is key to understand the problem and to find effective and agreed solutions.
The application for mobile devices BYCATCH works with IOS and Android systems, with or without net coverage. It is necessary having opened at least once the application in a place with net coverage to work at sea without Internet connection. The application registers the bycatch date and location and allows for taking and attaching photos. If sending the data when the bycatch takes place is not possible, they can be sent afterwards, since from the application or the web, you will be able to adjust the date and the location, as well as to attach photos. Just keep in mind that taking photos of the bycaught animals is important for their identification.
